January 2025/Somatic Experiencing (R) and Ceramics/Creating Your Sacred Container for Neural Safety
Join us in this small seven week (six lesson classes over a seven week window) class of 2-3 people to explore the body centered, trauma healing work of Peter Levine, PhD while combining proximity to nature and outdoor space with the basics of throwing a cylinder on the wheel. We will use Dr Levine’s groundbreaking lens for body centered healing with a PolyVagal focus in the context of working with clay. Emphasis on creating a small container with or without a lid that can be a physical representation of the “sacred container of safety” that we develop inside ourselves. In trauma healing work, before addressing difficulties, we must develop the basic awareness of orienting to safety, both inside our body and to the external environment. The repair and establishment of healthy boundaries follows with its partner, developing resource, and preferentially attending to what is easy. In a world where “going hard into the hard place” is constantly taught and held as a value, learning how to “unlearn” this pattern is a process. When we preferentially attend to what is easy, our autonomic nervous system can begin to orient to neural safety and we can experience the completeness of human expression. Spending time on resource and ease, will develop a container for the more difficult work that will arise.
Join Cheryl Drake-Bowers, Movement Intelligence Teacher, Somatic Experiencing (R) practitioner in training and Advanced Myofascial Therapist for this unique and gentle experience.
Students will meet once a week for 2 ½ hour class and have designated weekend studio hours each week for individual work in the studio. Basics of wedging clay, throwing a cylinder on the wheel, trimming and working with surface decoration techniques will be taught. Our studio is complete with glazes, decorating slips, tools and all materials needed for work in the studio. One bag of white stoneware or porcelain clay is included in the fee. You will be able to fire your work in the kiln at the end of our class and receive your finished work for no extra charge. Bisqued work will be fired to Cone 10. More details will be emailed to you following registration.
